At Purston Infant School our vision is to give children a curriculum which prepares them to take part in the development of today’s rapidly changing world. To achieve this it involves exciting, practical hands on experiences that allows children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.
Our aim is that we set stimulating and challenging experiences that will be memorable and enjoyable and will help children secure and extend their learning. Through the study of design and technology they will combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. This allows them to reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts.
We believe that an effective design and technology education encourages curiosity and allows the children to ask questions and explore. We ensure that our design and technology lessons are accessible and engaging for all children and provide support and challenge where appropriate.
The National Curriculum will provide a structure and skill development for the design and technology curriculum being taught throughout the school, which is now linked, where possible to the theme topics to provide a creative scheme of work, which reflects a balanced programme of study.
- From Lower Foundation stage we begin by developing their own natural curiosity and begin to talk to children about how to plan, select tools and materials, create, join together, manipulate and reflect upon their product. We also introduce food technology and simple cooking techniques.
- In Upper Foundation, they can build on the skills and techniques already learned and add more complexity to their work to achieve the Early Learning goals.
- Throughout Key stage 1, we work towards achieving the National Curriculum aims of: design, make and evaluate.
We believe that these opportunities will ensure that our children are confident, life-long learners who will explore the world around them and allows them to be the best that they can be.
